If you decide to visit Santa Cruz, you should definitely consider this motel. Located on Ocean Boulevard at Soquel, it is convenient to both downtown and the beach. We've stayed at several motels/hotels in the area over the last few years (daughter is a student at UC Santa Cruz), and this is definitely one of the better, reasonably priced choices in the area. It cannot be beaten for value and location.
Owner managed, the couple is friendly, very accommodating, pleasant, and on site at all times. They run a quality property -- clean and well kept. That includes adequate on-site parking (some covered) and a small outdoor pool (see photos).
While the rooms may be considered a bit small by modern standards, they are certainly as good, and generally better, than similar competitors in the area. A particular nice feature (to us), was a small window in the bathroom (see photo). The bathroom included a small granite sink/vanity, and the rooms include cable TV, and telephone. Some have a mini refrigerator and microwave. You won't mistake that this is an older (fifties/sixties) motel , in style (see photos), design (see photos), layout, and amenities, -- but it is a perfectly pleasant, very reasonably priced place to stay.
During our five day stay, there were a couple of times we were disturbed by loud (younger) neighbors outside, but that can happen at any property, and I can personally vouch that the owner tries to keep a tight rein on such guests -- both during the reservations process and if they behave so on site.
Finally, the reservation process with Americas Best Value Inn was on of the best I've ever experienced -- both directly with the property and also over their main nationwide reservation system. All very friendly and accommodating.
